This cauldron is built from two ovals, a round belly and three short legs, with a ladle leaning out and a fire burning underneath. Most of it is simple curves, so it is a calm drawing to share with a child. Bubbles and color turn it into a pot of bright green brew.

Step by step

Draw it in 11 steps

Each picture shows the lines so far: the faded ones are done, the dark ones are this step’s.

  1. 1Draw the ladle

Step 1 of drawing a cauldron: Draw the ladle

Start with the ladle's handle, a long stick leaning to the right.

  2. 2Draw the rim

Step 2 of drawing a cauldron: Draw the rim

The rim is a wide oval. From the handle, go round each side and meet at the front.

  3. 3Draw the brew

Step 3 of drawing a cauldron: Draw the brew

Inside it, a smaller oval for the brew, again from the handle round both sides.

  4. 4Draw the pot

Step 4 of drawing a cauldron: Draw the pot

The pot hangs from the rim, a round belly wider than the rim. One side, then the other.

  5. 5Draw the legs

Step 5 of drawing a cauldron: Draw the legs

Three short legs stand under the belly: left, middle and right.

  6. 6Draw the flames

Step 6 of drawing a cauldron: Draw the flames

Between the legs burn two flames with three tips each, a small flame inside each one.

  7. 7Draw the bubbles

Step 7 of drawing a cauldron: Draw the bubbles

Five bubbles: three on the brew, two floating up into the air.

  8. 8Color the pot

Step 8 of drawing a cauldron: Color the pot

    Color the cauldron purple.

  9. 9Color the rim and legs

Step 9 of drawing a cauldron: Color the rim and legs

The rim and the legs are gray.

  10. 10Color the brew

Step 10 of drawing a cauldron: Color the brew

Color the brew green and the bubbles pale green.

  11. 11Color the ladle and flames

Step 11 of drawing a cauldron: Color the ladle and flames

Brown for the ladle, red and yellow for the flames.

Tips

Draw a cauldron well

Tips for drawing a cauldron

  • Start the ladle handle near the top of your page. The rim oval wraps around it, so leaving room above helps.
  • Make the rim oval about twice as wide as it is tall. A flatter oval makes the pot look like you are viewing it from the side.
  • Keep the brew oval a little inside the rim on every side, so a thin band of rim shows all the way around.
  • Let the belly swell out past both ends of the rim, then curve back in near the bottom where the legs go.
  • Draw the flames in the gaps between the legs and keep them below the belly, so the fire sits under the pot.

Common mistakes

  • The belly comes out the same width as the rim, so the cauldron looks like a bucket. Push each side of the belly outward past the rim before rounding it toward the bottom.
  • The legs are long and thin, and the pot looks like it is on stilts. Keep each leg short, about as tall as the flames, and a little wider at the bottom.
  • All five bubbles end up on the brew and the scene looks crowded. Put three bubbles on the brew and float the other two above the rim, the higher one smallest.

Make it your own

  • Color the brew blue or orange instead of green, with pale bubbles to match.
  • Add more floating bubbles rising above the rim, each one a little smaller than the last.
  • Make the flames taller, with four tips each, for a cauldron that is boiling hard.
  • Lean the ladle to the left instead and let the rim wrap around it from the other side.

Questions

Good to know

How do I make the cauldron look round and not flat?

Use an oval for the rim instead of a straight line, and make the belly bulge wider than that oval. The curve on both shows the pot is round.

Why does the ladle come first?

The rim and brew both curve around the handle. Drawing the handle first tells you where those ovals start and keeps the ladle looking like it sits inside the pot.

How do I draw the flames so they look like fire?

Give each flame three pointed tips and a wider bottom. Then draw a smaller flame inside it, and color the outside red and the inside yellow.

Where should the middle leg go?

Put it under the center of the belly, between the left and right legs. It can be a little shorter, since it stands toward the back of the pot.

How long does it take to draw a cauldron?

About 3 minutes for the lines, and a few more to color it in.

Can kids follow this guide?

Yes, children from about six can follow it on their own, and younger ones with a grown-up beside them.

What do I need?

Paper and a pencil or a pen, and crayons, markers or colored pencils for the colors. An eraser helps but isn’t needed.
