  • Steps: 9
  • Time: about 3 minutes
  • You need: paper, a pencil or a pen, something to color with

This crystal ball is mostly one big circle that rests in a small cup, so it stays simple even though it looks magical. Under the cup you add a collar, a wide base and three little feet. Then a single swirl and three stars make the ball feel like it holds a spell.

Step by step

Draw it in 9 steps

Each picture shows the lines so far: the faded ones are done, the dark ones are this step’s.

  1. 1Draw the ball

Step 1 of drawing a crystal ball: Draw the ball

The crystal ball is a big circle. From the top, round down each side to where the stand begins.

  2. 2Draw the cup

Step 2 of drawing a crystal ball: Draw the cup

A cup holds the ball: one curved line across, then a bowl shape below it.

  3. 3Draw the base

Step 3 of drawing a crystal ball: Draw the base

Under the cup, a short collar, then a wide flat base with rounded ends.

  4. 4Draw the feet

Step 4 of drawing a crystal ball: Draw the feet

Three feet stand under the base. The outer two curl out like hooks, the middle one ends in a knob.

  5. 5Draw the swirl

Step 5 of drawing a crystal ball: Draw the swirl

Now the swirl: one line that winds out from the middle of the ball.

  6. 6Draw the stars

Step 6 of drawing a crystal ball: Draw the stars

Three stars float around the swirl: a big one, a middle one and a small one.

  7. 7Color the ball

Step 7 of drawing a crystal ball: Color the ball

    Color the ball blue.

  8. 8Color the stand and stars

Step 8 of drawing a crystal ball: Color the stand and stars

The cup, the base and the stars are gold.

  9. 9Color the collar and feet

Step 9 of drawing a crystal ball: Color the collar and feet

Color the collar and the feet orange.

Tips

Draw a crystal ball well

Tips for drawing a crystal ball

  • Make the ball the biggest part by far. The whole stand, from cup to feet, should be about as tall as half the ball.
  • Stop the ball's two sides where the cup begins. The cup's top line covers the bottom of the ball, so there is nothing to erase.
  • Keep the collar narrow and short, about as wide as the bottom of the cup. Then the base below it can spread out wide.
  • Start the swirl in the center of the ball and let it wind outward. Keep it a little away from the edge so the stars have room.
  • Space the three stars around the swirl, not on top of it. Put the big one where there is the most empty space.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing a full closed circle for the ball, then adding the cup on top so lines cross. Bring each side down only to where the stand starts. The cup's curved line finishes the ball's bottom.
  • Making all three feet the same, so the stand looks stiff. Curl the two outer feet out like hooks, facing away from each other. Give the middle one a round knob at the end.
  • Drawing the three stars the same size, which looks flat and crowded. Make one big, one middle and one small. The difference in size makes them look like they float.

Make it your own

  • Wind the swirl the other way, or give it one more turn, so it looks like a different spell.
  • Color the ball purple or green instead of blue, and keep the gold stand so it still looks rich.
  • Move the stars to new spots inside the ball, like one high near the top and two low by the swirl.
  • Try the stand in silver and gray in place of gold and orange for a cooler, moonlit look.

Questions

Good to know

How do I draw a round circle for the crystal ball?

Draw it lightly in a few short curved strokes instead of one fast line. Turn your paper as you go, and fix any flat spots before you press harder.

Why does the ball not need a bottom line?

The cup holds the ball, so it hides the lowest part. The cup's curved top line works as the bottom of the ball.

How do I draw the stars so they look even?

Draw five points around a center you picture in your head. Make the small star last, since it is the hardest to keep neat.

How do I make the crystal ball look magical?

The swirl and stars do most of it. Keep the blue of the ball strong next to the gold stand so the ball stands out as the center.

How long does it take to draw a crystal ball?

About 3 minutes for the lines, and a few more to color it in.

Can kids follow this guide?

Yes, children from about six can follow it on their own, and younger ones with a grown-up beside them.

What do I need?

Paper and a pencil or a pen, and crayons, markers or colored pencils for the colors. An eraser helps but isn’t needed.
