An apple is a great first fruit to draw. It's a fat circle with a small dip on top, made from two curved sides that meet at the bottom. Add a short stem, a leaf shaped like a little boat, and three colors, and you have a simple apple anyone can draw.

Step by step

Draw it in 8 steps

Each picture shows the lines so far: the faded ones are done, the dark ones are this step’s.

  1. 1Draw the left side

Step 1 of drawing an apple: Draw the left side

An apple is a fat circle with a dip on top. From the dip, round the left side down to the bottom.

  2. 2Draw the right side

Step 2 of drawing an apple: Draw the right side

Now the right side. Start in the dip again and round it down until the two ends meet.

  3. 3Draw the stem

Step 3 of drawing an apple: Draw the stem

Poke a short stem up out of the dip. Up, over its little top, and back down.

  4. 4Draw the leaf

Step 4 of drawing an apple: Draw the leaf

A leaf hangs off the stem. Swoop out to a point and back, like a little boat.

  5. 5Draw the vein

Step 5 of drawing an apple: Draw the vein

Give the leaf a vein, one line from the stem toward the point.

  6. 6Color the apple

Step 6 of drawing an apple: Color the apple

    Color the apple red.

  7. 7Color the leaf

Step 7 of drawing an apple: Color the leaf

    The leaf is green.

  8. 8Color the stem

Step 8 of drawing an apple: Color the stem

    Color the stem brown.

Tips

Draw an apple well

Tips for drawing an apple

  • Make the dip shallow, about as wide as a fingertip. A deep notch makes the apple look like a heart.
  • Let both sides bulge out wider than the dip before they curve in toward the bottom. That keeps the apple round and full.
  • Keep the stem short, about the height of the dip or a little taller, so it pokes up and doesn't tower over the apple.
  • Make the leaf smaller than the stem is far from the apple's edge, roughly a quarter of the apple's width, so it hangs lightly off the stem.
  • Color in one direction with even pressure. Go slowly near the outline so the red stays inside the apple.

Common mistakes

  • The two sides don't meet at the bottom, leaving a gap or a sharp point. Watch where the left side stops before you draw the right one. Aim the right curve at that spot and round it in gently.
  • The stem starts beside the dip instead of inside it. Begin the stem right in the lowest point of the dip, where both sides of the apple start.
  • The vein runs past the leaf's tip or off its edge. Start the vein at the stem and stop it a little short of the point, keeping it in the middle of the leaf.

Make it your own

  • Color the apple green or yellow instead of red, and keep the leaf green and the stem brown.
  • Lean the stem a little to one side so the apple looks like it was just picked.
  • Hang the leaf on the other side of the stem, or tip it up so it looks lifted by a breeze.
  • Draw two or three apples side by side, making each one a slightly different size.

Questions

Good to know

How do I keep my apple from looking like a plain circle?

The dip on top does the work. Bring both sides down into a small dent where the stem sits, and the circle turns into an apple right away.

Why draw the apple in two halves instead of one circle?

Two curves are easier to control than one big loop. Starting both in the dip helps them match, so the apple looks even on both sides.

How big should the leaf be compared to the apple?

Keep it small, about a quarter as wide as the apple. A leaf that's too big pulls attention away from the round shape.

How can a young child draw this apple?

Let them draw the two curves slowly while you point to where each one starts and stops. The stem, leaf and coloring are easy wins after that.

How long does it take to draw an apple?

About 2 minutes for the lines, and a few more to color it in.

Can kids follow this guide?

Yes, children from about six can follow it on their own, and younger ones with a grown-up beside them.

What do I need?

Paper and a pencil or a pen, and crayons, markers or colored pencils for the colors. An eraser helps but isn’t needed.
