This spellbook starts as a leaning diamond for the cover, then gains a thick block of pages underneath. Gold corner caps, a sun-shaped medallion with a jewel, and a strap with a clasp turn a plain box into a book that looks old and full of secrets.

Step by step

Draw it in 12 steps

Each picture shows the lines so far: the faded ones are done, the dark ones are this step’s.

  1. 1Draw the cover

Step 1 of drawing a spellbook: Draw the cover

The cover is a leaning diamond. Draw its two near edges, then its two far edges.

  2. 2Draw the thickness

Step 2 of drawing a spellbook: Draw the thickness

Three short edges hang down from the cover: at the left, the front and the right corner.

  3. 3Draw the bottom

Step 3 of drawing a spellbook: Draw the bottom

Join their ends along the bottom, running the same way as the cover's edges.

  4. 4Draw the metal corners

Step 4 of drawing a spellbook: Draw the metal corners

Cut a small triangle off each corner of the cover. These are the metal caps.

  5. 5Draw the medallion

Step 5 of drawing a spellbook: Draw the medallion

In the middle sits a medallion shaped like a sun, with eight pointed rays.

  6. 6Draw the jewel

Step 6 of drawing a spellbook: Draw the jewel

An oval jewel fills its center.

  7. 7Draw the clasp

Step 7 of drawing a spellbook: Draw the clasp

Near the right edge, a small square clasp keeps the book shut.

  8. 8Draw the strap

Step 8 of drawing a spellbook: Draw the strap

The strap runs from the clasp over the edge and down the pages: two lines side by side.

  9. 9Color the cover

Step 9 of drawing a spellbook: Color the cover

    Color the cover red.

  10. 10Color the pages

Step 10 of drawing a spellbook: Color the pages

The pages are cream on the left side and gray on the right.

  11. 11Color the metal

Step 11 of drawing a spellbook: Color the metal

Gold for the corners, the medallion and the clasp.

  12. 12Color the jewel and strap

Step 12 of drawing a spellbook: Color the jewel and strap

The jewel is blue. The strap is orange on the cover and brown down the side.

Tips

Draw a spellbook well

Tips for drawing a spellbook

  • Keep the opposite edges of the diamond parallel. If the near edges tilt one way, the far edges should tilt the same way.
  • Make the three hanging edges the same length. That keeps the book from looking like it slopes.
  • Draw the corner triangles small, about a tenth of the cover's edge, so they read as metal caps and not missing pieces.
  • Place the medallion in the center of the diamond, and make it about a third as wide as the cover.
  • Space the eight rays evenly by drawing four first, like a plus sign, then add the four between them.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing the cover as a flat square seen from straight above. Lean it into a diamond so one corner points toward you. That tilt is what shows the book in three-quarter view.
  • Running the bottom line straight across instead of following the cover. Make each bottom line match the angle of the cover edge directly above it.
  • Drawing the strap as one line that stops at the edge of the cover. Use two lines side by side, and carry them over the edge and down the pages.

Make it your own

  • Swap the red cover for deep green or purple, and keep the gold metal so it still looks precious.
  • Turn the oval jewel into a red or green gem to match a different kind of magic.
  • Give the medallion six or twelve rays instead of eight for a different sun.
  • Make the pages taller to draw an even thicker book of spells.

Questions

Good to know

How do I make the book look thick?

The depth comes from the three short edges below the cover. Make them longer for a fatter book, and keep them the same length as each other.

Why are the pages two different colors?

Cream on the left and gray on the right shows light hitting one side and shade on the other. That simple change makes the book feel solid.

Where should the clasp go?

Put the small square clasp near the right edge of the cover. The strap then has a short distance to travel over that edge and down the pages.

Can a child draw this spellbook?

Yes. Every part is a simple shape: a diamond, triangles, a star-like sun, an oval, a square and two lines. A parent can help keep the diamond's edges parallel.

How long does it take to draw a spellbook?

About 3 minutes for the lines, and a few more to color it in.

Can kids follow this guide?

Yes, children from about six can follow it on their own, and younger ones with a grown-up beside them.

What do I need?

Paper and a pencil or a pen, and crayons, markers or colored pencils for the colors. An eraser helps but isn’t needed.
