Quick answer
Draw a star in 6 steps: draw the top point, draw the right point, draw the right leg, then carry on one line at a time and color it in. It takes about 2 minutes with a pencil or a pen.
- Steps: 6
- Time: about 2 minutes
- You need: paper, a pencil or a pen, something to color with
- From: the Space path in Paper Coach
You'll draw this star the way you'd trace around a cookie cutter: one point at a time, all in one line. You start at the top, then go around to the right, down to the two legs, over to the left, and back to where you began. When the outline is closed, you fill it with yellow.
Step by step
Draw it in 6 steps
Each picture shows the lines so far: the faded ones are done, the dark ones are this step’s.
1Draw the top point
First the top point. Go up to the tip and straight back down the other side.
2Draw the right point
Next, the point reaching out to the right. Same shape, lying on its side.
3Draw the right leg
Now down to the leg on the right. Out to its tip, then back up.
4Draw the left leg
The left leg is a mirror of it. Out to the tip, then back.
5Draw the left point
Last, the point reaching left. Close the star where you began.
6Color the star
Color the star yellow.
Tips
Draw a star well
Tips for drawing a star
- Before you start, put a small dot where the first line begins. Then you'll know exactly where to finish when you close the star.
- Make all five points about the same length. The two legs can spread a little wider apart than the top point does.
- The inner corners, where one point turns into the next, should sit at about the same distance from the middle of the star.
- Draw each point as a narrow triangle with a sharp tip, so it's taller than it is wide at the base.
- Press lightly while you go around. Once all five points look even, trace over the outline with a firmer line.
Common mistakes
- The first point you draw comes out big, and every point after it gets a little smaller. After each point, look back at the top one and match its length before you start the next.
- The two legs don't match, so the star tips over to one side. Draw the left leg as a mirror of the right one, at the same angle and length, pointing down and out.
- The last line misses the starting point and leaves a gap, or it crosses past it. Slow down on the final point and aim straight at your starting dot so the outline closes cleanly.
Make it your own
- Round off each tip a little for a softer, cartoon-style star.
- Draw three or four stars in different sizes across the page to fill a night sky.
- Color the star orange or gold instead of yellow, or go over the outline in a darker shade.
- Add a few straight lines trailing behind one side to turn it into a shooting star.

Questions
Good to know
Can I draw a star without lifting my pencil?
Yes. This method is one continuous outline. You go up and down each point in order around the star, then end at the spot where you started.
Why does my star look lopsided?
Usually it's because one point is longer than the others or the legs aren't the same. Compare the opposite points and fix the one that stands out.
Where should I start drawing a star?
Start at the bottom-left corner of the top point, then go up to its tip. When you begin at the top, it's easier to keep the star upright and even.
How do I make the points sharp?
Draw each side of a point as a straight line, and stop right at the tip before you turn back. If you curve into the turn, the tip comes out rounded.
How long does it take to draw a star?
About 2 minutes for the lines, and a few more to color it in.
Can kids follow this guide?
Yes, children from about six can follow it on their own, and younger ones with a grown-up beside them.
What do I need?
Paper and a pencil or a pen, and crayons, markers or colored pencils for the colors. An eraser helps but isn’t needed.
